Hampton County Release Records
“Released” describes the end or change of one custodian’s hold. It does not always mean that the person walked into the community with no further duty. Hampton Adult Intake may release someone on bond, move the person to a local unit, deliver the person to Western Tidewater Regional Jail, or carry out a commitment to the Virginia Department of Corrections. A federal writ or immigration detainer may lead to another agency. The Hampton Sheriff’s booking and release transaction is the key local record because it can identify the time, reason, and destination.
Hampton is an independent city. The phrase “Hampton County” is used here only because people often search that wording. The official offices are the City of Hampton Sheriff’s Office and City of Hampton courts. A person who is absent from a current list is not proven released. The entry may have moved to a different facility, aged off a display, been corrected, or become restricted by law. Confirmation starts with the last known custodian and the date of custody.
- Discharge
- The end of the named sentence or correctional authority.
- Time served
- Confinement credited to a sentence has been completed.
- Detainer
- A hold or request from another agency that can prevent community release.
- Transfer
- A move to another custodian, not freedom from custody.
Hampton County Release Types
The words in a release field change the next search. Bond or recognizance ends pretrial physical custody under court terms, while the criminal case remains open. A dismissal, acquittal, or nolle prosequi may end the authority to hold if no other case applies. Time served or sentence expiration addresses a custodial term. Parole changes prison confinement to supervised release. Probation is court-ordered supervision and can begin with or without a prison stay. A transfer simply names the next custodian. “Deceased” terminates custody but is never a community release.
| Release entry | What it means | Next source |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or recognizance | Local pretrial custody ended under a court order | Hampton court case and Sheriff transaction |
| Time served or expiration | The identified custodial term ended | Release record and signed sentencing order |
| Parole or supervision | Prison custody changed, but legal supervision may continue | VADOC and District 30 |
| Transfer | Another agency took custody | Destination jail, VADOC, BOP, or ICE |
| Court-directed release | A judge’s order removed the current hold | Signed order plus actual jail exit transaction |
| Deceased | Custody ended because the person died | Custodian record and authorized official sources |
What Hampton Release Records Show
Hampton’s Inmate Records unit maintains Jail Management System data, processes court documents, calculates local time and program good time, and sends state time to VADOC. Those functions support a focused request, but they do not prove that every database field is public. Ask for existing, releasable parts of the booking and release record. Personal identifiers, medical information, security details, victim information, juvenile material, and sealed content may be withheld or redacted.
| Field | What it can establish |
|---|---|
| Booked name and booking number | Connects the request to the correct jail episode |
| Booking date and facility | Identifies when and where Hampton custody began |
| Charges, case, and bond | Links the jail entry to its legal authority |
| Release date and time | Records when that custodian processed the change |
| Release transaction or reason | Distinguishes bond, completion, court order, or transfer |
| Destination agency | Shows where a transferred person went next |
| Booking photograph | Identifies the booking event, subject to access limits |
Can a court record replace the jail record? No. A judge’s order proves the legal event, while the Sheriff’s transaction records the physical custody change. Use both when the exact result matters.
Request Hampton County Release Records
Send a local jail request to the Hampton Sheriff’s FOIA Officer at 1928 W. Pembroke Avenue, Hampton, VA 23661, by phone at 757-926-2540 or fax at 757-926-2537. Hampton also accepts requests through the channels on its Requesting Records page. Virginia law does not require special words or a written request, but a written request gives both sides a clear date range and field list.
- Provide the full name, booking number if known, and a narrow booking or release date range.
- Ask for the existing booking and release transaction, including date, time, type, authority, and destination on transfer.
- Request the booking photograph separately and state that a regular electronic format is preferred.
- If an existing daily release report covers the dates, name it without asking staff to create a new report.
- Ask for a cost estimate before a stated limit and request the legal basis for any withheld part.

Under Virginia FOIA, a qualifying request normally receives production, partial production, a specific denial, or a time notice within five working days. An additional seven working days may be invoked when needed. Actual reasonable search and copying costs may apply, and a deposit may be requested when an estimate exceeds $200. Access rights depend on the current requester provisions, so an out-of-state requester should not assume identical enforcement rights.
Virginia Release Record Limits
Virginia FOIA covers existing public records held by public bodies and permits specific exclusions. It does not force an office to answer a general question such as why a person left if no explanatory record exists. Ask for the release entry and authorizing document instead. Va. Code § 2.2-3706 supplies a strong path for an adult routine-booking photograph in a proper law-enforcement request, subject to its exceptions. Arrest-photo authority does not require Hampton to run a public image gallery.
Sealing and expungement can remove a public search result even though a booking once occurred. The official expungement statute contains versions affected by a December 1, 2026 transition, and the newer sealing chapter must be read by effective date and offense. Hampton does not publish a public jail-record retention term in the cited pages. Ask which Library of Virginia schedule governs the specific jail-management or photograph record.
Find Hampton County Released Inmates
Start with a full legal name, spelling variants, date of birth used privately, approximate custody dates, and any booking, case, or VADOC number. Then decide who last held the person. Hampton Adult Intake and the Sheriff cover local episodes. WTRJ covers many Hampton inmates after the city joined that regional authority. VADOC covers state custody or supervision. BOP and ICE answer separate federal questions.
- Check the current Hampton or WTRJ custody route only to learn whether the person appears in custody now.
- If absent, call Adult Intake or the last facility and ask whether the event was release or transfer.
- Request the dated release or transfer transaction from the actual custodian.
- Search Hampton General District and Circuit Court records, then obtain the signed order if needed.
- Follow a state commitment to VADOC, a federal commitment to BOP, or an immigration handoff to ICE.
- Verify parole, probation, or pretrial reporting with the office that administers it.
A missing current-roster entry is only a lead. It does not distinguish community release from transfer, court movement, or a data change.
The City of Hampton has no verified public rolling release feed. The Hampton 24-Hour Releases procedure explains how to request a same-day existing report without treating a current roster as release history.
Hampton Release Court Search
Hampton’s court trail can split. General District Court handles adult misdemeanors and felony preliminary stages, while Circuit Court handles felony trials, sentencing, district appeals, and later circuit orders. Search the Virginia Online Case Information System at both levels. Match the full name, case number, and event date. A felony may begin under a district number and continue after certification or indictment under a Circuit Court number.
The Hampton Circuit Court Clerk is at 237 N. King Street, Hampton, VA 23669-0040, with listed public hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and phone 757-727-6105. Online entries may show bond, dismissal, conviction, sentencing, suspended time, probation, revocation, or appeal. The signed order is the best proof of what the judge directed. It still does not replace the jail’s release timestamp or rule out another hold.
VADOC Hampton Release Lookup
Use the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator after a Hampton record or court order shows a state commitment. A seven-digit VADOC number is the best input. Name searches require at least the first three letters of the first name and the full last name, with location, race, gender, and age-range filters available. The CAPTCHA-protected service is described as updating daily, but VADOC warns that data may be wrong or stale.
| Search field | Use | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| VADOC number | Most exact state-system match | It does not identify a purely local booking |
| Name | Finds possible state records | Spelling and shared names can mislead |
| Location or status | Shows the current VADOC report | Community supervision is not prison custody |
| Release-related date | Shows the field as VADOC labels it | A projected date is not an actual event |
The official locator interface can be reviewed at its source before interpreting a state result.
The captured VADOC page reinforces that the state route is separate from the Hampton Sheriff’s local release ledger. A fully discharged person may no longer appear, so request inactive records when history is required.
Hampton Release Facility Map
The exact site and custody date matter because the Hampton Correctional Facility is marked temporarily closed. The Sheriff lists the Community Corrections Center and Adult Intake at different addresses. Hampton also became a WTRJ member on September 1, 2024, while Hampton Roads Regional Jail ended inmate operations on April 1, 2024. Older records can still name the closed or former facilities.
The Hampton Sheriff facility page shows the present local arrangement.
Use the name on the booking, transport record, or court paperwork, then ask whether the person moved to another Hampton unit or outside custodian.
| Facility or system | Release-record role |
|---|---|
| Hampton Correctional Facility | Historical local records during its closure |
| Hampton Community Corrections Center (Annex) | Present local correctional address |
| Hampton Adult Intake | Booking and immediate routing |
| Western Tidewater Regional Jail | Current regional custody |
| Hampton Roads Regional Jail | Historical regional custody |
| Virginia Department of Corrections system | State commitment and discharge |
| Federal Bureau of Prisons system | Federal release records |
| ICE detention system | Current civil detention and recent custody |
WTRJ Release Money Rules
Western Tidewater Regional Jail publishes a rare operational clue in its property and account rules. A released person normally receives the remaining account balance on a debit card, while a balance below $25 may be paid in cash. Medical copays, damaged-property charges, or other amounts may remain due. The rules ordinarily allow 30 days to pay unless arrangements are made.
A transferred person’s funds instead go to the receiving facility. That difference can support a release-versus-transfer inquiry, but it is not a substitute for the official transaction. Ask WTRJ for the event time, disposition, and destination.
Hampton Release Visiting Wait
WTRJ applies a distinctive post-release rule to visits. Its official visitation requirements say a former inmate may not visit a current inmate until 30 days after release. That wait makes a verified release date useful for planning a visit, but the rule is not evidence that release occurred. Confirm the date in WTRJ’s release transaction before counting the period.
A transfer does not necessarily start the same post-release situation. If the person left WTRJ for VADOC, federal custody, or another jail, first establish the event type and destination. The visitation restriction and the custody record answer different questions.
Hampton Post-Release Supervision
The Virginia Parole Board decides eligible parole matters. VADOC Community Corrections administers state probation, parole, and other supervision. A Board grant can still be subject to an effective date, release planning, or detainers, so it is not the physical exit record. District 30 serves Hampton at 757-727-4855. Its official directory displays both 7 West Queens Way and 903 Enterprise Parkway, Suite 110 without a clear distinction in extracted text, so call before visiting.
Hampton also has local pretrial supervision at 236 N. King Street, 757-726-6904. Pretrial release is not parole. The Post-Release Supervision page separates Board decisions, VADOC administration, local pretrial reporting, and final discharge.
Hampton Release Reentry Help
The Hampton Re-Entry Council brings public, nonprofit, and faith-based participants into a local navigation network. Hampton also hosts a “So You Just Got Released … Now What?” packet. Those sources can help with identity documents, health, transportation, personal support, and required reporting after release. They do not confirm that a release happened or correct a jail record.
The city’s reentry source can be viewed directly.
The captured city page identifies Hampton’s local reentry network. Legal reporting instructions still come from the office administering the person’s supervision.
Correct Hampton Release Records
The city-hosted “So You Just Got Released ... Now What?” packet is the better starting point for identity documents and agency navigation. It cannot amend a Sheriff jail record. If a release entry is wrong, use Hampton Inmate Records or the city FOIA channel and identify the disputed booking, field, and date.
Ask for the existing entry, the supporting court order, and any releasable amendment or audit information. A general plea to “fix the record” is less precise and may seek an answer instead of a record. Corrections may also need to be raised separately with the court or VADOC when those custodians hold their own version.
Federal and ICE Release Checks
The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal inmates from 1982 forward. Its result can list a federal register number, identifying data, release date, and “Released” or “Not in BOP custody.” That proves the end of BOP custody as reported, not the end of federal supervised release or a later state or immigration hold. WTRJ also houses some federal prisoners, so leaving that building may be a federal transfer.
The ICE Online Detainee Locator is chiefly a current civil-detention tool and can include people released from ICE custody within the prior 60 days. Exact input matters. A missing result can reflect spelling, age limits, data lag, recent border custody, or an older release. For a Hampton handoff, first obtain the local transfer destination, then check ICE. The U.S. Marshals Service has no comparable public national release-history locator.
Note: Every locator reports only its own custodian, so no-result screens must be checked against the dated Hampton release or transfer entry.
Hampton Custody Status Sources
Choose a system by the question it can answer. A live roster addresses present jail custody. A release record describes how that jail episode ended. A court record explains the judicial authority. A corrections locator reports a state or federal system. None is a universal Hampton release database.
| Source | Best use | Does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Hampton or WTRJ roster | Present reported local custody | Why a missing person left |
| Sheriff or WTRJ release record | Actual local release or transfer event | End of every other agency hold |
| Virginia court file | Bond, disposition, sentence, and orders | Minute of physical exit |
| VADOC locator | State custody or supervision report | A purely local jail history |
| BOP locator | Federal custody and release date | Local, state, or ICE status |
| VINELink | Local jail status and alerts | A final court or release ledger |
Virginia Jail VINE supplies custody information and event alerts for participating local and regional jails. A user selects Virginia, matches the person and agency, and registers through the options shown for that record. VADOC state-prison victim notifications use NAAVI instead and have statutory eligibility limits. A VINE alert can lag or describe a transfer, so confirm it with the named custodian.
